Vein of stars the flaming lips chords1/10/2024 ![]() There's a moment in last year's documentary, The Fearless Freaks, where Wayne Coyne is playing a song he was writing during the time of the Clouds Taste Metallic sessions. Quote from: " scribe Mark Richardson" Flaming Lips Wow, I am in the extremely unusual (and slightly distressing) position of agreeing almost entirely with every word of a Pitchfork review. Haven't heard any of 'Mystics' yet but will be snapping a copy up next week, for sure. ![]() 'Yoshimi' is my favourite album of the 21st century so far, by some distance. ![]() The recent DVDs (documentary, and collection of their promo vids) are both interesting in terms of tracing the way the band has developed, from enthusiastic punks to the near-religious experience they offer today. I got the two compilations of their early stuff last year and really enjoyed these too, although as I spent much of the 80s listening to Butthole Surfers/Scratch Acid/Happy Flowers and the like, that's perhaps no surprise. As Wayne Coyne himself said recently, everyone talks about the great extravaganzas of the 1960s, but he's trying to do the same sort of thing now. I saw them live twice a couple of years back, in Nottingham and Leicester - the latter was the best gig I've ever seen, in 27 years of gig-going - I genuinely felt as though I'd just seen The Beatles circa 1968, and vaguely remember saying so to my equally stunned mates on the way out of De Montfort Hall. I'm a latecomer to The Flaming Lips, but they're probably the best band in the world at the moment. What do people think of thier much earlier stuff? Has anyone seen the DVD/movie/documentary about them? Really good viewing, I saw it at a mates and am compelled to pick it up for myself. I'm dying to see them live at some point - really excited about it happening one day. I really like Fight Test and One More Robot, though. I used to really like Yoshimi, but for whatever reason I don't listen to that album much anymore. but I think Bulletin has the best opener of any album of that kind. I don't think it's as good as Soft Bulletin, although it's a longer and more complete album. And at 3:45 or thereabouts it has the best little riff ever which they just play the once I've always loved that the Lips have so many magical music moments that they can be flippant and just chuck them away like that. I've seen Yeah Yeah Yeah Song get a real slating on the net which annoys me a lot as it's a great song, fantastic really. it's bumped up thier position on my Audioscobbler by a fair amount.
